Kicking Back on Fort Myers Beach

by Charlie Peay on February 23rd, 2010

The best thing about Ft. Myers Beach is that you can choose to do everything or nothing at all! If you’re feeling adventurous, there is always plenty of activity to be found in the Times Square entertainment district at the north end of the island. Just follow the green and white “Fort Meyers Beach” signs from McGregor Boulevard, Gladiolus Drive or Summerlin Road to San Carlos Boulevard which will lead you directly across the Matanzas Pass Bridge right into the heart of the entertainment district. From there you can drive south on Estero Boulevard the entire length of the island until it becomes County Highway 865 which also serves as a shortcut from Fort Myers to Naples and Marco Island if you’re headed in that direction.

The main attraction at Fort Myers Beach, of course, are the beautiful white sand beaches which serve as a magnet for legions of bare-legged, sun-seeking souls who don’t seem to have a care in the world. Depending on the time of day, you may have to slow up just to bit to allow for beachgoers to cross the road…that is, if you don’t decide to park and join in the fun! In addition to the gorgeous beaches and sparkling warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, a myriad of taste-tempting restaurants, trendy gift shops and popular fast food spots will greet you at every turn. If you’re like most vacationers and decide to give into temptation and stop, that’s OK but please be forewarned–you’re likely to spend a few hours if not the rest of day savoring all of the local attractions!

If the beautiful surroundings of this idyllic vacation destination happen to catch your imagination, and you feel yourself being irrevocably drawn to return to Fort Myers Beach year after year, don’t feel too badly because you’re definitely not alone! Family-friendly restaurants serving mouth-watering fresh seafood, an extraordinary selection of world-class condominiums, quaint cottages, and plenty of Old Florida charm will do that to the best of us. Throw in the annual Shrimp Festival, shopping, nightlife, and recreational opportunities galore and you’ve obviously got the recipe for a beach vacation paradise!

With miles and miles of white, sandy beaches to explore, it is little wonder that sunset-watching here has been elevated to a near art form, and has become as much a part of the daily routine as soaking in the rays and enjoying the cool, tropical breezes.
