It’s LuLuPalooza Time

by S. Lynne on May 31st, 2013

Good food, good music, and lots of hand-clapping, head-bobbing, toe-tapping fun. That’s what to expect when the annual LuLuPalooza kicks off on Saturday, June 8, at LuLu’s at Homeport restaurant and marina in Gulf Shores. This is the ninth year for the popular music festival, which, under the guidance of LuLu’s owner Lucy Buffett (yes, she’s Jimmy’s sister), regularly brings in some of the Gulf Coast’s most talented musicians to “rock the Intracoastal Waterway.”

Headliner for the 2013 lineup is Papa Grows Funk, one of the most successful funk bands to come out of New Orleans. Like Dr. John and the Neville Brothers, Papa Grows Funk pays homage to its roots in the Big Easy while also looking to the future. The band plays more than 100 shows per year for its growing international fan base.

Also appearing are Willie Sugarcapps, specializing in Southern Gulf Coast country blues, folk rock, and stomp-n-roll, and Austin-based indie rock band Uncle Lucius.

The music starts at 11 a.m. and continues all day long. Willie Sugarcapps takes the stage from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by Uncle Lucius from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Papa Grows Funk will perform from 8:15 to 10:15 p.m. Admission is free.

If the music isn’t enough to hold the kids’ attention, that’s no reason to leave them behind. In addition to the fascination of watching the boat and barge traffic on the Intracoastal Waterway, youngsters are sure to enjoy browsing the gift shop for souvenir T-shirts and climbing around on LuLu’s exciting new ropes course.
