The museum was founded "to celebrate and preserve the maritime history of Apalachicola in a hands-on learning environment with active sailing, boat building, restoration, and educational displays." Centerpiece of the museum is the 58-foot wooden ketch Quark. The museum also offers a variety of eco-tours.
